Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)

TMD is a disorder in which the jaw joint becomes inflamed

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is a condition in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Everyone has a TMJ but not everyone has TMD. TMD is a disorder in which the jaw joint becomes inflamed, irritated and painful, can make joint sounds and can even get stuck open or closed. There is a small disc in the jaw joint that can move excessively or get stuck during movement which can cause the mouth to get stuck open or closed and create the audible ‘pop or click’ noise during opening or closing. This condition can be caused by trauma, stress, after dental visits or from insidious onset (unknown cause)

we specialize in advanced manual therapies that can treat TMD

ActiveCare Physical Therapists specialize in advanced manual therapies that can treat TMD. We use intraoral techniques for joint and soft tissue mobilizations. Extra oral techniques include soft tissue mobilization and exercises around the jaw joint to strengthen and align the joint more appropriately. Our holistic approach addresses the kinetic chain and the way the jaw, head, neck and upper trunk connect. Management includes other psychosocial components like stress, behavior and environment.

Patients are relieved once they learn that physical therapy can treat jaw joint issues. We also recommend alternative therapies like acupuncture, reiki and massage to help with stress management.
