Dr. Karena Wu is a Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT) through Maitland-Australian Physiotherapy Seminars (MAPS). The therapists at ACPT are skilled in the MAPS approach and use it to quickly assess and treat the patients. Dr. Wu mentors her staff to attain the COMT, which is an intermediate level of manual therapy. All therapists at ACPT are able to apply this high quality assessment and treatment therapy to fix the patients. We find that this is the best manual therapy approach for our patients.
ActiveCare PT is also a host facility for the MAPS continuing education courses for physiotherapists. Dr. Wu is a firm believer in continuing education as learning is a lifelong process. It makes for the best physical therapists in our profession as well as at ActiveCare Physical Therapy.
Dr. Karena Wu has trained for over 17 years in NYC. She met Farhan Dhalla, Canadian physiotherapist and now spiritual personal trainer over 10 years ago while he was attending a conference in NYC. Both have broadened their horizons and offer their services abroad in India. Farhan trains Bollywood celebrity, Deepika Padukone and Dr. Wu works with several Bollywood stars-Viddyut Jammwal, Shabbir Ahluwalia, and Shailendra Singh, to name a few. Karena Wu and Team ActiveCare Physical Therapy collaborated with the Arthritis Foundation for the 2014 Walk to Cure Arthritis. This year the walk event was held at Foley Square Park in New York. Our team had 50 participants and we walked over and back on the Brooklyn Bridge. ActiveCare PT was showcased in a booth. Karena was the Corporate Chair Honoree this year and was able to generate support from SpiderTech Kinesiology Tape, Body Armor Sports Drink, Kind Bars, and Biofreeze. Information about the walk was generated on Fox News, CBS2 NY, and in Total Food Service and the Epoch Times. Celebrity Chef Seamus Mullen and Tertulia catered the breakfast in the VIP tent and Seamus was honored as the Celebrity Honoree. A beautifully sunny day made the walk over the East River and the program before the walk a spectacular event. Thank you everyone for your generous support and participation!

Karena was asked to present at the TRIARQ Symposium on April 8, 2014 to discuss the evolving role of Physical Therapists in the treatment of arthritis and her collaboration with the Arthritis Foundation. The topic is ‘Emerging Technology in Cartilage Regeneration & Preservation’. This year she is on the Committee for the NYC Walk to Cure Arthritis as the Corporate Chair and has brought in company donations to help support the walk. Karena Wu was asked to be Medical Director for the ‘DO ATLANTIC CITY’ AVP/IMG ProBeach Volleyball Tournament in Atlantic City, September 6-8, 2013. The medical tent consisted of Sports Medicine Physicians, Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Athletic Trainers, and Licensed Massage Therapists. This volleyball invitational consisted of professional athletes and Olympic champions of beach volleyball. Silver medalists Jen Kessy and April Ross won the Women’s Finals and Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson won in the Men’s Finals! Congratulations to all of the players who participated and gave it their all!
Karena has been working with restaurant industry professionals since 2004 when she met Wylie DuFresne at WD-50. She has since worked with celebrity chefs and bartenders like Seamus Mullen of Boqueira and Patricio Sandoval of Mercadito, who have had the honor of being on Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, Top Chef Just Desserts, The Next Iron Chef and Iron Chef America. Karena does both in-office and on-site consultations and treatments.

ActiveCare Physical Therapy participated again in the NYC 5K Arthritis Walk in Battery Park City on May 19, 2013. Karena was the In-Kind Coordinator responsible for getting free food and drink donations. We received donations from Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, BodyArmor Super Drink, and Volvic Water. The Foundation arranged for free hot dogs after the walk with the help of Suzuki Capital, LLC. Kinesio Taping Association International (KTAI) donated kinesio tape pre-cut strips as well as applied tape to participants. KTAI was situated alongside Body Armor Sports Drinks in the In Kind Donor Tent next to the ActiveCare Tent. ActiveCare’s patient, Maurelhena Walles, a World and Nationally ranked Master’s Track and Field athlete lead the warm-up stretch before the walk. ActiveCare had 34 team members walk. Karena was invited to present at 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds in a Continuing Education Interdisciplinary Program titled: Arthritis, A Joint Disease. The lecture was held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the Times Center in New York, NY. Karena’s lecture was titled: Physical Therapy Rehabilitation for Persons with Arthritis. She spoke about the different components of holistic physical therapy and the benefit of pilates in rehabilitation and in functional training. She also addressed the link between holistic treatment and holistic exercise. Turtle Shell Health (TSH) is a platform for alternative healthcare practitioners. Co-founder Ana Nieto, created an online presence for a multitude of practitioners to include Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, alternative and holistic health practitioners. Karena was asked again to speak on Sciatica, Low Back Pain and the Core. The blog talk radio show aired on August 15, 2012.
ActiveCare PT was chosen as one of the only local facilities to participate in the Maitland Australian Physiotherapy Seminars (MAPS) studies on Shoulder Impingement and Spinal Conditions. The studies will compile data from applicable study participants. The Shoulder Impingement study looks at the addition of a neck joint mobilization and its effect on shoulder impingement outcome as compared with those subjects that do not receive the neck joint mobilization. The spinal conditions study looks at the changes during and between treatment sessions as well as the actual presence of the ‘Comparable Sign’, which is a Maitland-specific painful functional movement or position that is assessed during the treatment sessions. ActiveCare Physical Therapy participated in the 10th Anniversary NYC Arthritis Walk in Battery Park on June 23, 2012. We were the proud winners of the PT Practice Challenge and were honored with a booth at the event. Karena was also asked to lead the warm-up stretch before the walk took place. Karena has the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Ronald Primas, an internist who offers travel and emergency care 24 hours a day. Dr. Primas is Medical Director of New York Hotel Urgent Medical Services and is a travel medicine expert. ActiveCare Physical Therapy is participating in the 2012 NYC PT Practice Challenge for the Arthritis Foundation in an effort to raise funds and awareness to fight arthritis. The 3 mile walk takes place in Historic Battery Park Saturday, June 23, 2012. Our goal is to find 50 team members and raise $10,000. We hope to meet our goals and fight the nation’s most common cause of disability.
